Programs

SFR is always trying to educate the university community and the public on the importance of recycling. The best way to do this is through fun activities, a little competition, and maybe a yard sale. Of course I am talking about OSU Recycles Day, Recycle Mania, and Dump and Run, three events sponsored by SFR. If you want to know more about recycling, or SFR, come to one of these events.

OSU Recycles Day

Originated from America Recycles Day, every year SFR gets on the oval to promote recycling and educate the students of OSU.

Filled with recycling propaganda and information, this event occurs near November 15th, the national America Recycles Day. There are free prizes and often an interesting display of OSU's recycling progress.

Dump & Run OSU

Everyone underestimates the amount of usable items thrown away as soon as Spring Quarter is finished. Many good couches, appliances, clothes, bedding, electronics and other miscellaneous items are tossed to be taken to the nearest dump site.

Dump and Run is the solution to this problem. Started by Lisa Heller Boragine, Dump and Run holds a huge yard sale to sell reusable items, extending the life of items and reducing the amount of waste that goes straight into the landfill. The proceeds go to local charities and student organizations that volunteer as a way to fundraise.

The first Dump and Run event at OSU was in 2004. It was quite possible the largest yard sale Columbus has ever seen, and, needless to say, quite a success.

If you have any questions about Dump and Run, please contact the coordinators at dumpandrunosu@gmail.com.

RecycleMania

Which university can recycle the most? That was the question asked when this recycling competition was created by Ohio University and Miami of Ohio. Much of a university's trash sources from residence and dining halls, so the program focuses on those two locations in order to minimize waste and maximize recycling.

The program has seen great success, with over 200 universities now participating. See the ReycleMania website for more information.
* Students For Recycling will not be participating in RecycleMania 2008 in order to pursue new and exciting recycling programs at Ohio State.

Ink Cartridge Campaign

This new program seeks to collect used ink cartridges from students in the residence halls. Collection boxes will be placed in residence halls and emptied by SFR members to be recycled. For more information, or if you would like to help, please contact Stacy Weisfeld .

Finals Week Paper Campaign

Who has lots of notes and paper to dispose of at the end of every quarter? The thousands of OSU students! In order to reduce the amount of paper going into the trash, and put it back into recycled use, a campaign is under way. We plan to coordinate with Academic Halls to place paper recycling collection bins and signage near the largest lecture halls on campus throughout finals week. After you finish those finals, pitch those papers into a recycling bin, not a trashcan. The trees appreciate it.

Earth Day

Whether it's on the South Oval or volunteering in the community, Students For Recycling tries to participate in Earth Day events on campus and in the Columbus community. Check our website or contact us if you would like to join us!

Scarlet, Gray & Green Fair

Started by Chrissy Cooley of Students for a Sustainable Campus in 2006, this event brings together organizations from Ohio State and the Columbus community for a day of green ideas and social awareness. You can find out about recycling electronics, organic foods, biodegradable household products, plants, solar panels, bikes, and more things that help keep our planet healthy. This event usually occurs the first Friday in October and you can find SFR tabling there with lots of information and items to give out.
